Unique effects blending
FX Blend is a unique feature to Zynaptiq's roster; where other effects have a dry/wet control Wormhole has FX Blend. FX Blend expands upon dry/wet controls by utilising multiple algorithms for combining two signal sources into one brand new and completely unique sound. Wormhole's FX Blend does include the classic dry/wet crossfade but also features two implementations of Zynaptiq's unique structural audio morphing technology that enables you to morph seamlessly between your input and the effect.
FX blend can be a dramatically pronounced effect and effect morphing is capable of developing a rich range of motion through your effects layer, but Zynaptiq packages Wormhole with a comprehensive level of control for live manipulation or automation so you can shift seamlessly and effectively. Thus, Wormhole's powerful FX blend can be as subtle and careful as you need it to be; while granting a nuanced and impactful effects layer nevertheless.
Multiple frequency warping capabilities
Warp offers another unique effects processor that can be succinctly described as frequency warping. However, Warp performs a localised time-domain spectral warping effect with a character between ring and frequency modulation, frequency and format shifting, modal resonation and spectral mapping.
Warp produces inharmonic, metallic spectral elements that evoke the previously listed effects, but utilises an algorithm that produces timbres that cannot be achieved with these. Warp operates with a noticeably more complex structure than with ring modulation or frequency shifting, yet is simultaneously tidier and more balanced in its spectral distribution.
Wide pitch and frequency shifting
Shift combines pitch and frequency shifting effects into one single processing step with a unique design that is neither delay/grain nor FFT/phase-vocoder based. Thus, Shift offers plus or minus four octaves of pitch shift and plus or minus four kHz of frequency shift without exhibiting any of the typical shifting artefacts such as grains, flamming or aliasing, and is very low on pitch-jumping or warbling.
Shift's pitch shifter features four dedicated algorithm modes: Smooth, Tight, Detune A and Detune B. The Smooth and Tight modes shift up or down up to 48 semitones. The Detune modes shift the left and right channels in opposite directions by plus or minus 48 cents to produce a thickening effect that evokes a chorus.
Shift's frequency shifter offers around 96dB of carrier or side-band suppression that greatly enhances the range of useful effects that are available to you. Moreover, much like the pitch shifter, the frequency shifter is also aliasing free.
Finally, Shift features a unique Decay Time control. In this case, Decay Time discards signal components that exceed an adjustable duration to unclutter and tighten up your effect sound. Decay Time also reduces the ringing effect produced during shifting up by the longer decay times of low frequencies being shifted into the mid-range. In addition to these invaluable quality features Decay time can also be applied as a creative effect such as the simulation of analogue communications circuit 'sagging' or adding timbral 'fluttering'.
Simple but robust reverbs
Zynaptiq has packed two simple but robust reverbs into Wormhole. Specifically, these are randomly modulated hall-type reverbs, and while they share controls have distinct purposes and positions upon the signal chain that combine for a pronounced effect. One reverb is placed before the FX Blend so that it is accounted for in the effect morphing process, producing unusual reverb sounds. The other reverb is placed after the FX Blend for maximum reverb flexibility and a balanced quality between atypicality and recognisable. Ultimately, you decide whether to use either one or both at the same time.
Distinct delay feature
Wormhole's delay feature has unique properties that make it stand out from the crowd of commonly utilised pre-delays in multi-effects processors. In addition to delaying the effect signal, it can delay the dry signal separately or in combination, in opposing directions for the left and right channels. Thus, Wormhole's delay creates wide effects that are still balanced around the centre of the sonic field.
Reviews
"WORMHOLE is a great mangler, it twists & turns sounds into something special. Whether I'm creating creatures, technology, weapons, textures, or a vibe – WORMHOLE helps me get there. It's one of the "special" sonic brushes in my toolbox and helps create that secret sauce." - Scott Gershin
"WORMHOLE is my go-to tool for making things sound out-of-this-world. What I love about it is its ability to output totally different sounds out of the same settings just by feeding it different material. WORMHOLE has the ability to surprise me every time I use it. The plugin has a lot of depth and flexibility for designing sounds, from creature sounds to future tech or alien soundscapes.
I used WORMHOLE on Westworld for sound designs like Young Ford AI and Maeve's mind control motif, and a ton on Altered Carbon – there, it's pretty much on everything from weapons, alarms, sirens, creatures and other tech." - Brett Hinton
