Surf through your mixes
Taking a completely new approach to EQ, SurferEQ tracks your monophonic instruments in real-time, adjusting the position of your EQ bands based on the music, therefore letting your EQ 'surf' across the sound waves. Traditional and static EQs do a poor job of maintaining the timbre of an instrument when the music changes, highlighting the incorrect aspects of the frequency range. Adapting in real-time, SurferEQ is the first EQ of its kind to focus on the incoming music, maintaining the natural harmonic balance and transients relative to the incoming notes being played.
A total of seven bands are included, allowing you to track the pitch of your instrument or vocal in any key in any register along the frequency spectrum. The bands are comprised of high and low-pass filters and five asymmetrical, Q-coupled bell-shaped bands with the low and high-pass filters being able to switch to shelf mode and the middle band switchable to Harmonic Filter mode (more on this later).
Superior pitch detection
Designed from the ground up to be as accurate and transparent as possible, SurferEQ features advanced pitch detection algorithms that accurately avoid octave errors, even in real-time. With over a year's worth of research and development, SurferEQ accurately tracks your pitch, regardless of where the instrument or vocal range is. For more accurate detection, a range of settings has been included to help customise your sound. Pitch Threshold lets you set the noise floor of the detection engine. Filtering out any unwanted background noise and interference, SurferEQ will more accurately detect the pitch of your incoming audio instead of artefacts in your signal. Additionally, a Pitch Tolerance control enables you to determine pitch-detection sensitivity. By achieving a balance between loud and quiet sources in your audio, you can more accurately tune SurferEQ to listen for correct musical values instead of percussive or background noises.
Unique filter algorithms
Custom-designed, the morphing filter bands in SurferEQ are designed with unique 'circuit' structures. Optimised to achieve minimal group delays resulting in immaculate transient retention, the SurferEQ's sound is fast and highly accurate. The asymmetrical and Q-coupled filters remain natural and transparent, even when pushed to the extremes, meaning no matter how much you boost or take away, SurferEQ will blend with the source to perfection.
Developed specifically for the SurferEQ, a unique Harmonic Filter enables you to control the entire harmonic series of your instrument or vocals with just a single band of EQ. Eight different Harmonic Filters are available and selectable via the Q-selector switch, each of which offers automatic gain compensation to create natural and transparent harmonic control with ease.
Both low and high-filter modes can be toggled between 6, 12, 18 and 24dB/Oct to offer more aggressive filtering of the extreme lows and harsh highs. In Surf mode, both low and high filters can be locked to a certain threshold to prevent any excessive filtering from occurring. Simply set your limit to a specific frequency and engage Surf mode, the SurferEQ won't filter below the target threshold, allowing for more lows and highs to remain in the signal.
Innovative Spectral Gate
Newly developed for the SurferEQ, the Spectral Gate enables any bands to be engaged when an audio signal crosses a user-defined threshold. Conversely, a Reverse mode allows any bands to become disengaged when crossing the same threshold. Ideal for a wide range of functions in your mix, the Spectral Gate can be used to reduce a certain frequency range to create space within your mix. Try using the Spectral Gate to reduce the vocal frequency ranges in an electric guitar track to duck the level when a lead vocal is playing over the top.
Alternatively, the reverse mode can be used to allow cymbal bleed into the resonance of the toms instead of gating them completely. When a tom drum is hit, the gate will disengage, allowing for the full frequency range of decay to be played with each hit, before being gated again when the resonance has fully decayed. An extremely useful tool within your repertoire, the Spectral Gate can be used to EQ the transient or sustain of your track independently, without the introduction of artefacts, or altering the natural sustain and dynamics of your audio.
Turn your EQ into an instrument with MIDI integration
Evolving beyond traditional EQs, each band within SurferEQ can be controlled using MIDI notes, allowing each band to be 'performed' using a keyboard, creating a unique effect instrument. Three MIDI modes are presented to offer a wide range of different functions within the plug-in. Mode 1 offers Note Override Detection, designed for easy correction of the pitch engage when required. Each MIDI note performed will override the internal detection algorithm, allowing you to more accurately track your instrument.
The second mode is Surf By Note. This mode has been purposely designed for frequency-ducking whereby the pitch detection is controlled by MIDI and the internal engine is disabled. Lastly, the third mode is Instrument Mode. Here, you can perform your effect like an instrument whereby the source audio acts as an oscillator to trigger the detection engine.
Reviews
"SurferEQ really helped us with the problematic vocals. Surf mode makes it easier to sculpt the issues and get it to a place where we can then apply our usual vocal chain processing. Great tool!" - Michael Brauer - Multiple Grammy-winning mix engineer (John Mayer, Coldplay, James Morrison)
"SurferEQ is a godsend, especially when it comes to things like Jazz tracks. It's a really brilliant idea" - Dave Darlington - Grammy award-winning engineer (Isley Brothers, Miles Davis, Todd Terry)
"SurferEQ allows me to easily have a kick drum and a sub-heavy 808 coexist without sacrificing the integrity of either. I won't mix without it." - Just Blaze - Multi-platinum producer (JAY-Z, Beyonce, Eminem)
