Key Features
The Gauge ECM-87 Large Diaphragm Microphone is a cardioid, transformerless microphone boasting premium performance at an affordable price. Designed and tested by industry-leading engineers, the Gauge ECM-87 is suitable for recording a multitude of different instruments through the meticulous design and sound quality of the microphone. A full-range frequency response with extended, rounded and full low-end coupled with high-dynamic range and SPL handling ensures that you can capture everything from detailed, solo violin performances to full rock drummers with ease.
The cardioid design and integrated pop-filter lends itself for use on vocal performances, achieving efficient off-axis rejection and reducing the effects of proximity to deliver a clean and pristine vocal recording. A hidden low-frequency cut helps to maintain an unhindered vocal track that doesn't suffer from any unwanted low-end as a result of vibrational noise or background ambience.
Unlike most sensitive large diaphragm microphones, the ECM-87 is suitable to be used as a live microphone thanks to its rugged enclosure and excellent off-axis cardioid polar pattern. With every microphone going through rigorous testing, you can be sure that your Gauge ECM-87 will be a mainstay in your microphone cabinet for every session you run.

Born from an idea that musical equipment should be made by musicians using skill and expertise instead of numerical data. With a team boasting over 25 years of experience within the industry, Gauge offers versatile studio microphones at an affordable price. Every microphone produced is done so with care and attention to the physical results instead of focusing on quality through graphs and data. Each and every microphone undergoes rigorous quality control checks to ensure high standards are produced throughout.
Ideal for studio application, the ECM-87 Microphone features a cardioid polar pattern. The capsule is just over 1-inch in size and has stellar off-axis rejection, ideal for capturing exactly what's in front of your microphone and rejecting any sound from the sides or rear of the capsule. Cardioid polar patterns lend themselves to working with one single sound source, capturing the performance only and effectively reducing sound from the back and sides, however, the ECM-87 is perfectly suited to capturing multiple sources at a time, even in live situations.
Capturing the cleanest performances is vital within highly detailed studio environments. To achieve this, the ECM-87 Large Diaphragm Condenser Microphone features an integrated pop-filter. The internal grille consists of a layered mesh screen that acts as a filter. Effectively reducing wind noise, breaths, plosives and harsh harmonics, the internal pop filter is the ideal solution for ensuring clean and pristine takes every time you record.
Hidden inside the ECM-87 is a low-frequency filter switch, allowing you to pre-filter the low-end response of your microphone. In using this, you can reduce the effect of any extraneous and unwanted noise in your microphone, be it from accidental knocks, vibrations or even loud environmental noises within your studio from fans or computers.
Additionally, it can be used to great effect to mask any proximity you may get when close-miking a vocalist or even from an acoustic drum. Not only that, you can simply use this for taste, filtering out any unwanted low-end on specific instruments in order to create a more clean response that sits better within your mix.
A staple for every microphone arsenal, the ECM-87 is versatile enough to be brought out in any recording session. The ultra-flat frequency response, premium noise performance and high SPL allow you to record a myriad of different instruments. Anything from dynamic solo female vocal performances, blistering drum kits, crunchy electric guitar amplifiers and even into the realm of classical performances, easily capturing the strings, brass and woodwind. A fantastic use of the ECM-87 is for a live-room microphone to capture the ambience of your entire instrument. The smooth and warm nature of the microphone coupled with the extended frequency response and rounded bass means you will be able to add a sense of depth and energy to your recordings that you won't get from simply close-miking your source.
