AJH Sonic XV Diode Ladder Filter, Silver (14HP) Overview
The AJH Minimod Sonic XV, Silver is a versatile 4-pole diode ladder filter that utilises the same circuitry and sound of the Musonics Sonic XV synthesizer. Featuring 2 waveshapers, the Sonic XV is like no other normal filter. The waveshapers allow you to add harmonics and distortion to a sound rather than simply filter it. The Minimod Sonic XV features 24db, 6dB, and bass pass outputs. The independent CV inputs allow for complex filtering and waveshaping, making the Sonic XV more than just a simple filter module. The diode ladder filter core offers a different character to transistor ladder filters. Additionally, the Sonic XV filter module allows you to mix the 2 waveshapers to the dry input signal for moulding and shaping your sound.

The Minimod Sonic XV module gets its inspiration from the diode ladder filter used on the Musonics Sonic V synthesizer. The diode ladder filter has a different character to the transistor ladder filter, which gives the Minimod Sonic XV its sound. The filter has the ability to self-oscillate and produce a sinewave output when at high levels.
Input Waveshaper
The module features 2 waveshapers that allow you to add harmonics and distortion to both the pre-filtered signal, and the resonance loop return signal. It’s most effective when used on certain waveforms like triangle and sine waves that have slower rise and fall times. The input waveshaper includes a 3 position bias control switch that allows for variation to the waveshaping, resulting in different effects and timbres. You can mix in the amount of waveshaping with the dry input signal to shape the sound. Because the wavefolder adds harmonic content to the input signal before it is processed by the filter core , the wavefolder can essentially be used to add brightness to low frequency sounds.
Resonance Waveshaper
The 2nd waveshaper featured on the Sonic XV is the resonance waveshaper. This is an overdrive waveshaper which is only effective when filter resonance is added. It can be mixed with the dry resonance loop signal. Combining these 2 waveshapers with the filter, makes the Sonic XV a powerful and versatile filter module. Not only can you filter sounds, you can also add small or large amount of waveshaping to add warmth, fatness, and additional harmonics.
Design
The layout and design of the Sonic XV makes it ideal for live performance. AJH have carefully designed it so your cables stay out of the way when adjusting knobs. All the patch points are positioned at the bottom of the module, whilst all the knobs are at the top, leaving you free to make adjustments without getting caught on any cables. Coated in a sleek, silver finish, the Minimod Sonic XV offers a simplified interface and professional appearance.
