A mic steeped in history
Upon it’s release in 1949, Shure’s ‘Green Bullet’ microphone was originally intended for speech. But it slowly started to develop a reputation amongst musicians. And went on to make a profound mark on music...
As legend has it, the king of Chicago blues - Marion ‘Little Walter’ Jacobs’ - was the first to unlock the Green Bullet's musical potential.
He discovered that when plugged into a guitar amp, the Green Bullet sounded unlike any other microphone. It’s raw, searing sound could cut through the increasingly loud electric guitars of the era. And the humble harmonica was propelled in a dazzling, new amplified direction.
Once Shure learnt how integral the ‘Green Bullet’ had become to the trademark blues sound, they started to fine-tune it. Enhancing the original design specifically for the needs of harmonica players. And now, after a rich, long history, the Shure 520DX is better than ever. And remains the most popular harmonica mic in the world.
Take control
You can’t always rely on the sound engineer to know what’s right for your songs. Sometimes your harmonica needs to be heard, right at the forefront. Loud and clear. And other times you just need to sit nicely in the background.
Well with the built-in volume dial on the Shure 520DX - now you can be in control. You can easily make quick adjustments to your level, as you perform.
A secret weapon in the studio…
Thanks to its incredibly unique sound signature, the Shure 520DX has also become a powerful creative tool for recording engineers.
With it’s steep frequency roll off from 5kHz upwards, the ‘Green Bullet’ is just thick, mid-range goodness. It’s perfect for capturing ‘vintage’ vocals, and can help add a ‘lo-fi’ flavour to your mix.
And with its saturated tone and super compressed dynamic range, it makes for a really vibey drum mic too. Blend a little bit of the ‘Green Bullet’ crunchiness with your clean drum sound- and be amazed. It will bring your drums to life. Injecting a nice dose of excitement into your track.
