The beast from the east – analog East-Coast synthesis
East Coast vs West Coast synthesis has always been a talking point in the modular world. To put it simply, the East-Coast style utilises subtractive synthesis whereas the West-Coast style revolves around additive synthesis. These two schools of synthesis each have unique characteristics exclusive to the different synthesis styles. Whilst staying true to the East Coast style, the Cre8audio East Beast explores new territory, replacing the classic transistor-ladder filter with its own, custom PGH filter. The East Beast delivers powerful, harmonically rich waveforms capable of creating massive tones. The filter stage subtracts harmonic content from the waveforms helping to provide more concise control over your overall tonality.
Designed in collaboration with Pittsburgh Modular; Cre8audio has created a powerful modular synthesizer system that can also be converted to the Eurorack format, simply by removing it from its enclosure. With an intuitive layout and an all-analog circuit; the East Beast is capable of producing monstrous tones ranging from massive bass sounds to ethereal pads.
Fifth-generation analog oscillator from Pittsburgh Modular
The beating heart of the East Beast is a powerful, 5th generation analog oscillator designed by the geniuses at Pittsburgh Modular. The product of over 10 years of research and development, this newly conceived analog oscillator delivers an ultra-stable performance with modern components. The result is a rich and unique sound, capable of producing a range of waveforms including sine, triangle, saw, square and pitch noise. You can even combine the waveforms or use pulse-width/frequency modulation for expansive sound design capabilities.
Cutting-edge PGH filter – say goodbye to dead spots
Conventionally, East Coast-style synthesizers feature the classic transistor ladder filter or some variation. The East Beast features a newly developed style of filter – the PGH filter. The filter (specially designed by Pittsburgh Modular) retains the same creamy/smooth sound of classic filters, but with zero dead spots. This voltage-controlled state variable filter provides you with three filter output responses in the form of highpass, lowpass and bandpass. Producing a smooth and natural sweep, the filter features both a modulation knob and resonance control, allowing you to dial in your sound with maximum precision.
Envelope generator, LFO and patch points
Sculpt and shape your sound further using the onboard envelope generator and LFO. The four-stage ADSR envelope generator allows you to smooth or sharpen your sound using the various parameters on offer. The envelope’s output can be used to control the amplitude of various parameters such as the oscillator, the cutoff frequency of a filter and much more. Any function that accepts control voltages; the East Beast provides amplitude control for.
The LFO is a dual-range, low-frequency oscillator with a +/-5V triangle wave output. It is a great tool for generating long sweeps and audio-rate frequency modulation. There are two LFO ranges in the form of 2Hz – 500 Hz (High) and 41 seconds – 5Hz (Low). The semi-modular design allows for loads of patching fun, with nine patchable modules in total to choose from. All in all, the East Beast features 18 (eurorack compatible) patch points, so you can create and modulate straight out of the box.
32-step sequencer, controller and performance tools
Start to build song ideas or create sequences on the fly using the onboard 32-step sequencer. Complete with 13 presets to choose from; the East Beast’s sequencer is perfect for creating patterns and loops. There is also an onboard arpeggiator with the ability to save patterns as well as a clock synced LFO, decay envelope and a random voltage generator for expanded modular scope. The onboard button controller is designed to work as a one-octave keyboard complete with a MIDI to CV converter, octave shifting and tap tempo (clock source). The intuitive controller can be used to trigger sounds, play notes, input steps and much more.
